With the B1 Bis heavy tank, it is considered the best French assault tank available in 1940. The S35s are concentrated in the light mechanical divisions (DLM), as the Germans do with their Panzerdivision. In 1941, the 12th GACA was created in French West Africa and equipped with SOMUA S35 tanks. These tanks participated in the Tunisian campaign in 1943. Finally, SOMUA, taken back from the occupier, took part in the Liberation and the battle of the Royan pocket.
