DESCRIPTION Panzer III E BEF 1940
The Panzer III Ausf. E saw primary frontline service between 1939 and 1941–1942. The vast majority of these tanks—originally featuring 30 mm of armor—were destroyed, withdrawn from frontline combat units, or converted and modernized (notably rearmed with a 50 mm gun or transformed into command and observation vehicles) between 1941 and 1943, as their 37 mm guns became obsolete. However, some derivative chassis survived and served in secondary or training roles until 1944–1945.
96 units produced between december 1938 and october 1939.
The Panzerbefehlswagen III Ausf. E command variants (often abbreviated as Pz.Bef.Wg. III Ausf. E or Panzer III E Bef) were built primarily in March 1940, with a total of 45 units produced based on the Ausf. E combat tank chassis.
